North Weald Bassett Parish Council recognised its local heroes at the Citizen of the Year awards.

Parish council chairman Councillor Alan Buckley handed out the accolades to the commendable recipients at the Annual Parish Assembly.

Among the winners was Bryan Roth, recipient of the Residents' Nomination Award.

Mr Roth, who uses the North Weald Village Life Facebook page to share uplifting stories about his experiences as a recent widower, was honoured for his engaging and humorous perspective on handling everyday tasks alone.

The Volunteer Award was bestowed upon Margaret Mulliner, who bravely stepped into the role of chair of the Village Hall Charity following her husband, George's, sudden passing.

Known for her willingness to shoulder responsibilities such as cleaning, bookings, and correspondence, Mulliner has held the position over the past year.

Previous Great Britain and Northern Ireland 4x100m relay team member, Joanne Ryan, received the Sporting Award.

At the European Masters Athletics Championships in Pescara, Italy, Ryan's relay team won a gold medal, with her leading the run.

The Local Business Award, Highly Commended category, saw Mary Crosby recognised for her efforts in hosting the community Farmers' Market at The Parish Hall, Thornwood, every month.

Within the Special Community Awards, Darren Goodey and Mike Witham, from North Weald Airfield Operations, were lauded for their quick and able application of life-saving first aid to Ken Waylett, chairman of the Lotus Drivers Club, during an incident last May.

Additional awards were presented to the Poppy Collection Volunteer Group at North Weald Airfield for their persistent efforts and the Community Speedwatch team for prioritising safety within the parish.

Additionally, the Friends of St Andrew’s School have raised an impressive £20,000 towards building a new inclusive play sensory trail in the school, received the Group of the Year Award.

The night culminated with the crowning of the Overall Citizen of the Year Awards to Darren Goodey and Mike Witham, honouring their exceptional bravery and service to the community.

Their actions were indicative of the incredible spirit that North Weald Bassett Parish, and its citizens continue to demonstrate.
